This, the second book in 'The Magicians' series tells of Quentin and his friends in the imaginal world of Fillory. Some of the characters have come about their magical skill and knowledge via the channels of academia, while come about theirs in a more illicit manner -- learning from the magical 'und...

Why the hell not? I'm on a fantasy roll here. Plus I think I've mourned over [b:The Magicians|6101718|The Magicians (The Magicians, #1)|Lev Grossman|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1313772941s/6101718.jpg|6278977] long enough, no?

I have no idea how a book that's so fantastically written and with such an intriguing plot can go so very wrong... and it goes VERY wrong. My history with Lev Grossman goes all the way back to "The Magicians", the first book in this series. My review then was rather to the point: all Quentin does i...

This is a sequel to a book I pretty much hated, so you may be wondering, why did I read it? Well, a lot of people said it's better than the first one, and despite my feeling that The Magicians was just a cynical author taking an unsentimental dump on Harry Potter and Narnia, I admit it did have well...

This was better than 'The Magicians' -- or maybe I'm different -- after all, it has been 3 years since reading the first book in the series. I enjoyed the thrill ride through magic and different worlds and Julia's story. Dark, glittering, magical. I hope there will be a third book coming soon....

I was looking forward to this book. I did not read the first volume, but I heard lots of good things about this one and figured I'd start here. I am very glad I did not bother with the first (because depending on how bad it was and how much I heard about this one I may have ended up wasting enough...

While infinitely better than book #1 (The Magicians), the pitiful payoff is unequal to the pain and trauma Lev Grossman puts his characters through to entice further exploration from this reader. I'm perfectly find going into certain novels knowing the ending will be unsatisfactory, but novels begin...

The Magician King is a dark, funny novel that is better than The Magicians. It still questions what magic and heroism means in an imperfect world, but does so in a way that is a bit lighter and ultimately more satisfying than its precursor. It was a page-turner with an effective dual-story structure...

If the first one ("The Magicians") was a high three (like a 3.5), this one was more of a straight-up three. I should've known - the sequel is rarely as good as the first one. Still, it kept me engaged and wanting more - perhaps that was the problem, I was always wanting a bit more than it offered. M...

I wish I didnt leave as much time in between the two books as I did (almost a year) but I still found this sequel very enjoyable. While Quentin's pessimism gets to a lot of people, I find it realistic and therefore inviting. Little things often when unexplained, such as whatever causes the minor ear...
