I don't read a lot of Epic Fantasy. It's not that I don't enjoy it. I'm an impatient reader. I want action within the first few chapters. A proper epic fantasy requires quite a bit of set up. It takes a truly amazing author to keep my attention through 100 pages of set up. Canavan had my full attent...

3.5 stars. Trudi Canavan is an author I'd been looking forward to read for a long time, which is why she was pretty high on my list for the WWEnd Women of Genre Fiction Reading Challenge. Thanks to my book hoarding habits, I found that I actually own the first books from both her Black Magician Tril...

I enjoyed [b:The Magician's Apprentice|9001250|The Magician's Apprentice|Trudi Canavan|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1348397132s/9001250.jpg|3381062] so much and i was very disappointed with this book that i left after about a third of the way through. I am not gonna say much, I have a fever and I still want to finish this review. It was a nice fantasy tale about a young girl on the run as she is discovered to be a magician. She is scared they will kill her. We do get to see the conflicts in society that way. Not all is well, actually some have it ...

(3 1/2 stars)Very much the first part of a trilogy, whilst a book in its own right it definitely feels like part of a much longer story and for that reason, for me, felt a little slow. Picked up towards the end and there was enough intriguing questions that I'll probably read the other two.

The most disappointing and anticlimactic book I've read all year! It's sad too because I really liked it...

Sonea is a slum dweller. Each year slum dwellers are driven out of the city (an event which has links back to a time of famine, but now is habitual law-and-order puffery from the king). The Magicians assist the guard in driving the 'dwells' out to minimise fighting and casualties (which these days...

Read the full review here. This is a light, entertaining book that I enjoyed reading. The action takes place mainly in the slums of Kyralia and the Magician’s Guild, both of which were wonderfully realised. While there wasn’t a strong sense of place in the book because only the two of these places wa...
