This book didn't particularly have an overarching plot, but Mma Ramotswe is such an interesting character that she was the story. There were so many lines that I enjoyed."'We are the ones who first ploughed the earth when Modise (God) made it,' ran an old Setswana poem. 'We were the ones who made th...

It's probably just my own perspective and prejudices, but this book rubs me the wrong way. An elderly white man trying to write from the perspective of an African woman....despite his well-meaning attempts and good intentions, I find his characterization of her and his use of repetitive, simplistic...

This moved just way too slow for me. I really had to work at keeping my attention on it. I'd read a chapter and then go read another book, and so on. I thought if I could get past the beginning, it would get better but it just didn't. I liked the content but no the way it was delivered.

The book would jump from one time to another through out the book. I found it hard to keep time straight when reading. I enjoyed the book though and finished reading it in one day. The stories were captivating and I was rooting for her success while reading.

Another winner in the summer reading series, this book entranced me with its incredibly evocative descriptions of southern Africa. The main character, Precious Ramotswe, opens a detective agency with her inheritance. This first book in the series gives some background on her character and details he...

Fluffier than cotton candy, but excellent "I am too tired to process anything remotely meaningful but must stay awake to reset my internal clock to local time" reading. The tone is uneven; dark notes, like domestic abuse and miscarriage, clash oddly with the determinedly upbeat march of the story to...

Closer to 3.5 stars. This is my first foray into literature set in Africa, and Botswana in particular. Others have mentioned, as does the cover's blurbs, that this is story has hilarious elements in it. While some of Mma Ramotswe antics and detective techniques brought a smile to my face, most of...

This is another slow-moving tale of Precious Rawotse, her assistant, Mma Makutsi, her husband, and others in the continuing cast. As usual, not much goes on, but we get to spend a little more time with comfortable personalities and continue our slow look at Smith’s idea of Botswana. In this one, Pre...
