I couldn't summon up much sympathy for the self-absorbed main character and quickly lost interest in his struggle to find an identity. In the end I was left wondering whether he had learned anything of value from his experiences.

Jhumpa Lahiri's excellent mastery and command of language are amazing. She writes so effortlessly and enchantingly, in such a captivating manner and yet so matter-of-factly that her writing completely enthralls me. The book was just okay for me. I didn't like the whole relationship with Maxine, it felt too much like Gogol wanted to lose himself and disappear into Maxine's world, her house, her family. I also felt weird about Moushumi's affair. The way it's written from her perspective also made it a little jar...

Read as an audiobook. It pains me to say it because I thought Interpreter of Maladies was just lovely, but I found the latter 2/3 of this tedious. The protagonist, Gogol, seems to learn little from his experience and is passive or obstinate by turn. He is a paralyzed man, I get it. Unfortunately, he ...

Finished most the book in one go. I really enjoyed the author's style which trips right along effortlessly. The characters are well-developed, especially the mother. I didn't relate that well to Gogol, the main character, but I was fascinated by the story of his parents. I was surprised and found i...
