There's definitely a minimalist beauty to this simple story about Ivan and his friends. It's a quick read, though it's fully satisfying and powerful. I enjoyed it quite a lot.
Certainly a book that I will give to my niece to read since she now has to do book talks at school, and she is required to do some talks on Newberry Award winners. Until she's read this book, though, this review will just be my take on it.What I liked:1) Quite a literary work, actually, and there is...
That was a beautiful, special, wonderful book. I even cried a bit at the ending. So happy for Ivan at the ending, so happy for Ruby. They deserve it.I really loved that the book was told from the point of view of a gorilla. Not a human, no this time we get an animal. Normally I am not really liking ...

Hmmm. What can I say? A 320 page book intended for children grades 3 through 7. That’s what Amazon says, but I say, no way. 9-year-olds will love this book, yes. And yes, it is a book about a gorilla and his friends, both animal and human. However, this story goes much deeper. So much that I’m recom...
This story was really cute and I enjoyed it, but there were some parts that I did not think we're appropriate for middle-grade, because they even upset me. It was really well done, included nice pictures, and had a nice flow to it. Full review to come!
Changed my rating. Reading out loud to my 5th graders - who are in the palms of my/Applegate's hands. If inclined, they can sketch what they're visualizing. Artists all around, not just Ivan or Julia. One girl got her mom to buy her a copy. . . A really happy book-hooking week.
I am thankful for my Nerdy Book Club friends, Colby, John, Donalyn, Paul, Cindy, Katherine, Jen, Kellee, Franki, Sarah, Alyson, Mindi, et al, who, by sharing their enthusiasm for this book, led me to it. A remarkable book.
The first half of this book was so depressing I almost didn't finish it. I'm not a huge fan of stories told by animals anyway, and the only reason I kept reading is that I was hoping not to be left with that sad feeling I get when I read those stories. Luckily, the book goes by really really fast ...
