This dark and thrilling adventure, with an unforgettable heroine, will captivate fans of steampunk, fantasy, and romance. On her 18th birthday, Lena Mattacascar decides to search for her father, who disappeared into the northern wilderness of Scree when Lena was young. Scree is inhabited by Peculiars, people whose unusual characteristics make them unacceptable to modern society. Lena wonders if her father is the source of her own extraordinary characteristics and if she, too, is Peculiar. On the train she meets a young librarian, Jimson Quiggley, who is traveling to a town on the edge of Scree to work in the home and library of the inventor Mr. Beasley. The train is stopped by men being chased by the handsome young marshal Thomas Saltre. When Saltre learns who Lena’s father is, he convinces her to spy on Mr. Beasley and the strange folk who disappear into his home, Zephyr House. A daring escape in an aerocopter leads Lena into the wilds of Scree to confront her deepest fears.Praise for The PeculiarsSTARRED REVIEW"McQuerry offers a brooding northwest setting touched by steampunk elements to tell a story that is in equal parts inventive fantasy, light romance, and thrilling adventure. With a backdrop as strong as its heroine, this one is a page-turner."--Booklist, starred review“The Peculiars combines a teenage girl’s search for her identity with a setting that merges the genres of fantasy, gothic and steampunk. A light romance, a bit of adventure and the author’s inclusion of historical notes complete this delightful offering.”--BookPage"Readers graduating from the stories of C.S. Lewis and Edward Eager will be right at home—and cat lovers will adore Jimson’s employer’s pet, Mrs. Mumbles."--Publishers Weekly"A creative, entertaining, and wholly original fantasy."--The Horn Book"Richly atmospheric read."--Kirkus Reviews

5.0 The Peculiars
I read this last year, but it's recently out in paperback, so I wanted to have a more recent word about it. LOVED THIS BOOK. It is such unique YA. It had a flavor of steam punk and also supernatural, and I think it is one of the most under rated YA books of last year. So get it and read it. They've ...

4.0 The Peculiars
An adventurous story with a likeable heroine, set in a quirky historical time period. I liked its mix of historical fiction and fantasy. And it's a nice break from post-apocalyptic *everything* in YA.

I'm generally a big fan of steampunk novels, and so I was excited to read The Peculiars. Although, it didn't turn out to be quite what I expected. This was a book that held my attention for the most part, but was really missing something also. Slow at parts, I almost didn't make it through. Still, a...

3,5 stars: A fascinating story, but something was missing for me to make it a great book. I wanted to be more excited while reading the story, I wanted to be more invested with my feelings. But still it was a good book.

4.0 The Peculiars
After reading all of the negative reviews on The Peculiars I wasn't expecting that much. I was happily surprised that although the book is rather slow-paced, the setting was definitely worth it. Lena's dad was a goblin, a Peculiar. Now the government has decided that all Peculiars have to be sent t...
