'The Reader' gradually grew on me, still I think involving the Holocaust was a mistake the author made, trying to render the book more readable. Sex sales but heartbreaking stories about the Second World War sell too, so I was left with the impression that Schlink picked these two over-exploited top...

I don't like comparing books and films, but I had seen the film of this first (and enjoyed it) which encouraged me to seek out the book, and so I was familiar with the story beforehand. I loved the story first time round and the book contains even more of the thought-provoking nature of the topics c...

As he struggles to come to terms with his feelings for her then and afterwards, he attempts to find out the truth and motivation behind her beha...

Can we both condemn and understand the past?My reading of the English translation of this book may be influenced by the outstanding movie version, which won Kate Winslet her (well-deserved) Oscar. Often, when I read the book version of a movie that has moved me deeply I’m disappointed (or vice versa...
