This is so boring. Why does it have such a high rating? I agree that it has beautiful language, and I certainly don't need to be hit over the head with action. But wading through dronings of a butler about dignity and so on. Ugh!

What a great story! Told from the point of view of Stevens, a very proper British butler, this novel is a beautiful and sad piece about choices and regret. Definitely provides food for thought on how to live so we can all look forward to what remains of our day.

This is a lovely book. It manages to be moving and melancholy without actually being depressing. In fact it ends on a hopeful, optimistic note; looking to the future after the rest of the book has been spent surveying the past.
