3.5 stars, rounding up.This definitely had a distinct YA feel to it. While Sanderson's other stuff really carves out its own place in fantasy, this tended to follow more conventional YA patterns. It was still well written and enjoyable; I love the Joel/Melody team.

At a Glance:Okay, so I have a confession to make. This might make me a fiend in the world of YA, but here it is. I don't like steampunk. Yep. I know. It's awful. I don't know what it is, but the genre has just never appealed to me. Even when they turned the world of Avatar: The Last Airbende...

My Thoughts This review was so hard for me to write, because I love The Rithmatist so much. It's left me unable to form coherent thoughts, and so instead I must resort to expressing myself through gifs. So where does this leave me? Well! After a month of bouncing excitedly, I seem to have ...

"Description begins in the writer’s imagination, but should finish in the reader’s."Brandon Sanderson has hit a home run here in this awesome world of chalk, just sick with possibility. He drops you into this world of chalk drawings that come to life, possess power and threaten the main protagonist...

Writing: 4.5Story/Plot: 4Depth/Detail: 4Enjoyment: 4Joel wants to be a Rithmatist. Like, really bad. That's made abundantly clear for, oh, the entire book. Which is cool - being a Rithmatist sounds pretty sweet. Drawing with chalk and doing geometry and such and magic happens. It's a really unique s...

I sat down to read a chapter at supper and finished the book. A brilliant opening to the series, and I can't wait for the next book.

I don't think you can go wrong with *any* book by Brandon Sanderson. Well, any of his books angled to slightly adult persons. I am still trying his Alcatraz books, but they are just a bit too young for me (middle grade, I believe, 10 y/o). The Rithmatist is geared towards young-adults and that's ver...

Why in the world have I not yet read any of Brandon Sanderson's books before now?!?!?!?!? I absolutely adored "The Rithmatists." The characters were engaging and I loved the dueling scenes. Some of the theory behind Rithmatics was a bit confusing at times, but the illustrations definitely helped. My...

I tried explaining what this book is about to my husband, and I bumbled through it rather incoherently. I'm not going to try to recreate that here. I will point you to the book description ^ to learn what The Rithmatist is about. So, yeah. Basically these kids draw shapes with chalk to defend themsel...

I never got into The Wheel of Time. Back when it started, I heard of it, but it never grabbed my attention (by then, I had outgrown Piers Anthony, but had found my way into the heart of Stephen King territory), and now, I feel like there are just too many books for me to get started on it now (whic...
