2.5 starsI suppose the lesson here is that you can start out great, want to quit and then can continue onward and upward to finish a so-so book. I know that life is too short to read bad books, but I couldn't help myself. There were tiny bits of greatness in each page that really, really wanted to c...

How much did I love this book? Let me count the ways:1. A female protagonist who's strong, smart, funny, vulnerable, and scared, often in the same paragraph. This book passes the Bechdel test in spades. The fact that it was written by a guy is even more impressive.2. Partly epistolary. Turns out tha...

A smart funny thriller about Her Majesty's supernatural secret service, that is -- thankfully -- the first of an upcoming trilogy. Myfanwy Thomas, the title character, is smart, feisty and has extraordinary powers, which come in mighty handy. The rook -- one of two, along with bishops, chevaliers, ...

I quite liked it, but the quick wrap up ending bugged me a little. Really original and great story, although the body count is HUGE. Also, the constant mocking of what I thought sounded like a great wardrobe really wore on me after a while, as well as commenting on the looks of just about everyone.

I picked up this book in the library about two months ago, I did not read it and no real reason as to why. Then I started it and while I thought it was interesting, mostly this idea that you wake up with no memories, it was not as exciting as other books I had in my possession. At any rate I returne...

Would recommend people read for themselves and s...

Oh, I just really wanted to like this one! The pacing of this story just isn't helping me to fall into it. There are some very exciting and interesting passages that completely hook me, and then there is some sort of shift in pacing, and I'm completely knocked out of the flow of the story. I keep...

It is books like The Rook that remind me why I love to read. I listen to several book podcasts and read a number of book blogs. I inhale any best of the year and recommended reading lists I can find. I go to the library every weekend. So while nowhere close to all-knowing about the book industry, ...

I found the shift in pov from first to third a bit distracting. Overall, I really enjoyed this especially the historical and pop cultural references. My favorite reference was when Myfanwy could figure out why a large two door wardrobe in a spare room in a country house was a national security threa...
