A gorgeous book. I was very pleasantly surprised. It's not nearly as contrived as "A Little Princess" (which was still charming), and I loved hearing the Yorkshire accent - or as close to it as a Californian reader can come ;) It is cute and straight-forward; a genuine comfort book.

It has been awhile on this one, but I remember mostly being...unimpressed. I found the main character rather disturbing and not really sympathetic. Still, the book has its redeeming points and I will probably read it at least once more. I just already preferred older books like The Scarlet Pimpernel...
I just read this again and felt like I was a kid again. The writing us traditional, but gripping. The end is a bit odd (the 'Magic' that stands for religion), but I would still say it's one of my favourite children's books.
Having read The Secret Garden as a child I really wanted to read this book as an adult to see would I still feel the magic of the story many years on.
