Meh, the ending was all right (and I'm happy for Quoyle) but the rest of the book was just okay. Obviously, am not a big fan of it.I found the beginning to be quite choppy and took a bit getting use to. However, when you got into the pace, it's barely noticeable (only sometimes). At first, I also f...
"Ostrovní zprávy" The story centers on Quoyle, a newspaper worker from upstate New York whose father had emigrated from Newfoundland. Shortly after the suicide of his parents, Quoyle's unfaithful and abusive wife Petal and her lover leave town. Days later, she sells their daughters to a 'black marke...
Not so impressive on a re-read. Noticeable slowing of pace and interest once Quoyle and his family are on the island. Still, Proulx did open the way for a much more percussive and intense prose style, subsequently much imitated.
More of my favorite opening lines:"Here is an account of a few years in the life of Quoyle, born in Brooklyn and raised in a shuffle of dreary upstate towns. Hive-spangled, gut roaring with gas and cramp, he survived childhood; at the state university, hand clapped over chin, he camouflaged torment ...

It's a bit like a Newfoundland winter, long, and an iceberg floating in Killick-Claw bay, slow, very very slow. Bit dissappointing after "Close Range: Wyoming Stories"

So here's the issue I find I have with books like The Shipping News (and it's the same problem I have with Gone With the Wind, which I love, and anything by Hemingway, whom I loathe): stick to your characters. I know, I know, The Shipping News won the Pulitzer, and I'm sure a zillion people will dis...
there are some nice parts to this book, but i can't give it more stars because from beginning to end it was a chore to read. the first 100 pages in particular were just so hard to get through, and although it got easier, it never got easy. her style was interesting - some of her sentences were rea...
Life in Newfoundland. Reading The Shipping News enlightened me about a place I knew nothing about. The book should be written in ice-blue ink because the descriptions are so well-done, reading it gave me the shivers. The best thing about the writing is (and I read this after seeing the movie) Quoyle...
