A market town, made equally wealthy, complacent and soft by years of peace, exudes a powerful attraction for avaricious, callous and war-hardened eyes. And so Markethaven wakens one day to find itself facing a savage horde intent on murder and pillage, with only crumbling walls and the depleted ranks of a town guard more suited to parade grounds than battlefields standing between the populace and slaughter. Keeping alive the faint glimmer of hope for the townsfolk are the veteran captain of the guard and a small band of warriors who chance upon the besieged town. But will the strength of spirit and the will to live and protect that they draw from the hearts of the ordinary folk be enough to hold the walls of the town, or will they be overwhelmed by the might and savagery of the horde?
