This is the second time I've read The Sirens of Titan. The first time was in the early 70s. On this second read, it became obvious to me how much Vonnegut was an major influence on Douglas Adams. Both revel in illustrating through fiction the absurdity of life and the universe. Yet while Adams is co...

Jam-packed with Vonnegutian goodness, fellow wanderers. KV serves up bite-sized and bitter truths with the soothing balm of laughter. Vonnegut's early work is strong, and I like him much more than most of the post-WWII vets, because he cares so much about humanity.

I'll start with a roundabout introduction. Garry Kasparov was not just one of the best chessplayers of all time, he was also one of the best analysts. Even as a teenager, he was always coming up with the most amazing ideas. Chessplayers often prefer to hoard their ideas; it can be worth a lot to sur...
