"We are allowed to do that, are we not Mabel? To invent our own endings and choose joy over sorrow?” If you're looking for plot twists, strong magical realism theme, then The Snow Child is definitely not what to go for, the ending was even underwhelming and messy and sadly even a little anticipated....

To begin with, I really liked it, but by about half-way through it began to feel as though there wasn't enough story to go with the concept. By 70% there was a story but it was told so lightly it felt rushed. By 85% I was pushing through just to get the thing finished. I'd consider it 4 stars for th...

Basically, this is a book about a couple coming to terms with their old age. The thing that drew me into this book wasn't the plot or the characters, but the descriptions of Alaska. Eventually, I got into the story and I really liked it. It had just enough reality to be believable, and just enough fantasy to be fun. This could become one of my favorites!

Also posted on my book blog, Rinn Reads.Set in early twentieth century Alaska, this book has a bleak setting, made ever harsher by Eowyn Ivey's fantastic prose. From the very first chapter, the reader has a real idea of how tough life is out there, how remote and isolated everything is, and how hard...

I have always been a sucker for retellings of fairy tales and children's classics. So when my book club made this our February selection, I just knew it was something I would like. Even though I wasn't familiar with this particular Russian tale, The Snow Maiden, I wasn't at all let down. It's a beau...
