Gloomy! It's the darkest kind of Outsiders I've ever read about. I won't argue whether Meursault - the protagonist - have a soul or not, but I'm sure that he sees the world differently and feels differently. His perspective is summarized in the following lines:“I have never been able really to regret...

Here's the thing, I remember that somewhere, for some class, I was supposed to read this. And because it was at one of those times that I had to read a book a week for more than one class that this one got left by the wayside and I managed to get around talking about Camus, mainly because I'd read t...

an unusual and yet fascinating plot. this book did blow me away; the writing style was exceptional and i could relate, at times, with the main character's feelings. brilliant novel.

Reinforces the statement 'What matters is not how you start, but how you finish'. The perfect epitome of a captivating and thought provoking ending. In the first half I was feeling a bit detached from the story and the characters, but in the second half it was inevitable that I lost myself completely...

-Huh. So... She died. I'll just have to bury her.-Tissue?-Nah, I'm good.Well, it wasn't quite like that. But it has the essence of his reaction. And of the book. Anyway, this is the guy that everyone ended up hating. He didn't (actually, couldn't) show any emotion. Love, hate, regret. Nothing. I mea...

This was notionally a re-read, having read it (kinda sorta) in the original French and subsequently in the 1982 Joseph Laredo Penguin Modern Classics translation (titled The Outsider in that edition) as a 17 year-old French 'A' Level student. As 16 years have elapsed since then if I'm honest I could ...

I have to get one thing out of the way. The forward of this book states that Matthew Ward's translation is a more accurate version. That may well be so but I found this very stilted and with a total lack of flow that makes reading enjoyable. I may have to find a different version as that almost ruin...

The Stranger felt awkwardly familiar. No, this isn't just a play on words. My first book by Camus was The First Man. Up until then, I have not read a single Camus book. Nevertheless, while reading The Stranger, I felt an awkward familiarity with the text. And then I realized what it was - it was the...
