Twelve-year-old Will Parry is on the run. His father, a retired soldier and explorer, vanished in the Arctic soon after he was born, and now mysterious men (government? military?) are after the letters that he sent to Will's mother during his last expedition. Determined to find his father or at leas...
The second novel in Pullman's controversial His Dark Materials trilogy, The Subtle Knife introduces a new lead, twelve-year-old Will, a boy from our world on the run after *accidentally* murdering an intruder. Escaping through a window between the worlds, he meets Lyra in Cittagazze, a crossroads be...
The Subtle Knife by Phillip Pullman Plot: I’m not entirely sure what I was expecting. I guess more time in this world but I didn’t mind Cittagazze. It actually reminded me of Charn from The Magician’s Nephew. (Both worlds are barren and seem to by dying). I think part of the problem was the large ...
First thing first though.....Why? Why would you end a book there! Pullman you bastard. There now thats said and done and out of the way, i can explain my main issue. This book was good, not as good as the first book (in my opinion) but enjoyable. My problem was the reading - when i was reading i was r...
The Subtle Knife continues on pretty much where Northern Lights(The Golden Compass) left off. I'm not going to try and do a summary of the book right now, because there was so much there to talk about, and it's been a loooong day at work.I'm still trying to work out how to word the way I feel about ...
Read my full review here.In this installation of the series, Pullman takes us jumping from world to world, and this introduces new and exciting things. For example, we meet Dr. Mary Malone, a character who is dedicated to learning about Shadows - otherwise known as Dust. Also, Will is introduced. Th...
I loved the first book in the His Dark Materials trilogy, which began with The Golden Compass. A note on the front tells us "that first book was set in a world like ours, but different. This book begins in our own world." That first book is centered on Lyra, an eleven-year-old girl and the title ref...
I've said it before and I'll say it again ... I heart Lyra. She's brave, she's stubborn, she's passionate, she's determined. She's everything a good heroine should be with none of this pathetic hair-flicking, woe-is-me, life sucks because my boyfriend is a hot angel/vampire/jerk crap that seems to...
After many years I've finally gotten around to finishing this trilogy! I first read Northern Lights when it came out, I must have been about 11 or 12. I remember struggling through it because it was a little above my reading level - although I was fiercely proud of my reading abilities and wouldn't ...
Whereas I felt the first book really dragged (and I wouldn't have made it through it if it hadn't been an audio book), this one really grabbed and engaged me. My favorite of the trilogy.
