at first I was really into this and then it dragged. June grows during the novel, but so much of her internal thoughts are "I LIVE FOR ART I LOVE ENKI GIL IS MY FRIEND I HATE MY MOTHER" eventually I thought that June doth protest too much about living for art. There are definitely some cool ideas.

Wow.This looks like a little novel, but it's 289 pages packed full of character development, race relations, good LGBT representation, discussions on classism, the difference in thinking between generations, corrupt politics, etc. etc. etc. It's such a powerful and beautiful book that I'm not even s...

First and foremost, I should mention I did not finish this book. I do not think it is fair to rate a book based on number of stars, when I did not in fact finish it, so unless I am forced to, this review is unrated. I wasnt able to finish the book because I was disappointed in the book. I must adm...

While not free of the tropes of the genre, this book manages to rise above them, striking a mood that is reminiscent of A Wizard of Earthsea, while being utterly different in so many respects. June, the protagonist, lives in a post-apocalyptic matriarchy, situated in Brazil. She is a talented art...

Why did I wait so long to read this absolutely magnificent book? Why, why, why? Definitely upper YA (sex) and definitely crossover into adult. It's a futuristic fantasy set in a dystopian Brazil, and it's gorgeously written and features one of the most complex heroines of recent memory. Read this no...

***Note: this review assumes that you've read the book.*** This is a National Book Award longlist title, which is what drew me to it. I have to admit that I was surprised to see that Johnson has multiple previous publications, because I initially thought The Summer Prince was an ambitious debut...

So much more to this one than advertised, I don't even know where to start between the thorough examination of class and privilege, the mechanics of integrity faced with politics, the complete non-issue of sexuality, the tremendous emotional impact, the lovely prose and the carefully constructed cha...

I'm...not sure. More thoughts, later.-----------------There were parts of this book that had me saying Yes, YES! More! I loved that sexuality was ambiguous and no one really cared who you were sleeping with. The main character's mother was in a heterosexual relationship but after her husband died, m...
