What is left in me is sadness, tremendous amount of sadness. I feel sad that these soldiers were so very young, sad that some of them had to die, sad that some lived but not survived, sad that war brought all of this to them, to generations, and sad that things may happen again, like this.I could no...

War is a theme in so many books, be they historical fiction, memoirs, alternate histories... and I've cert...

I read this for the first time back in high school. I remembered liking it a good amount so I recommended it to Peter for our read aloud book. He really liked it and it was even better than I remembered. There's some disturbing stuff for sure but it's war stories so what can you expect, really.

I never thought I'd be interested in a grunt's eye view of the Vietnam war, but this turned out to be one of the most moving books I have ever read.

This is a must read for anyone who is pro-war. A set of short stories, but the characters in each of the stories is the same group of people in O'Brian's Alpha company during the Vietnam War. Powerful stories.

I felt mixed about this. There were pieces I like a lot and pieces I didn't like at all. I also wonder if part of the reason this book gets rated so highly is because of it's subject matter.I liked the "Sweetheart..." story because it seemed like the kind of story that might get told there by sold...

spoken about in reverent tones, the 1990 short story anthology/collection repeats itself several times, and ends up discussing over and over "is this really true? or is this non-fiction?" does contain moments of brilliance; there are some hemingwayesque passages, but what would be two or three absol...

This book is the only exposure to the Vietnam War that my high school gave me, and I read it in my English class when I was 15 or 16. It did a good job illustrating the misery of fighting and the things that cling to a young soldier's memory without being too graphic for a teenager. This is not a bo...

3.5 stars, actually. This one is a really tough one for me to review. In some ways, I really, really liked this book. In others, I had a major issue with it.LIKE: I loved the writing. I thought the writing was exceptional. The author is very talented at bringing a myriad of emotions to the surfa...

I've never read a book like this before about war. At some moments the tone, even when describing a dismembered body, was detached, stoic. I suppose it had to be that way. Otherwise the entire book would have been filled with sadness and tears...
