While this adventure/spy novel wasn't particularly tense or exciting, it's short enough that it didn't get too dull. To a modern reader, used to double agents, moles, and triple-crossers, the plot seems rather straight forward, and Rochard Hannay is no James Bond. Despite being the hero, he doesn't ...

My first book of John Buchan's. I loved the simple yet captivating flow of the plot with subtle twist and turn of events.

A lightweight as far as thrillers go but it is one of the earliest so that does count for something. I can't say any of it really surprised me but I did feel I was being pulled along on an adventure. What I did appreciate about this book was the glimpse into the politics that surrounded the first Wor...

I am currently working my way through the list of 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die and decided to read Buchan's short mystery/spy novel because it seemed like a quick and easy option to take me a step closer to maybe one day completing the list. The thirty nine steps has a remarkably unbelievable plot with a lot of deus ex machina. And yet the book is a classic because despite all the unbelievable elements it succeeds. Some critical readers may miss the brilliance of this novel due to their pedantic and uppish views. Such brilliance is that...

This was brilliant. Never seen any of the adaptions, although I did know something of what went on, but not the whole story. So I came to it very new. It's all a bit convolouted, and trying to describe the plot does tend to sink into melodrama, but somehow, when reading it, is seems entirely sensibl...

Maybe because I have seen three or four film versions, but there was not much tension for me while reading the book. Still three stars. The book is well written and now - at last - I know the real ending.
