So much to say on King Lear! Even ignoring the tragedy of Gloucester (and redemption of Edgar), the Tragedy of Lear is almost a tragedy too tragic. We look on Macbeth and see his murder-begetting-murder downward spiral, begot by a misguided ambition to regain the favor of his wife; we see Othello an...

this was Shakespeare's best play. generally you begin to yawn at Romeo and Juliet by the age of 18. MacBeth lasts a bit longer, maybe to 25 or even 27. King Lear remains with you through life (I suspect.)I am not a Cordelia fan. This is what you say when your father says, "here, I'm dividing up our ...

Prior to reading Lear, I hadn't read a Shakespearean play for four years. As soon as I started to read him, I remembered that he is a genius and that none of his reputation is groundless hype. "Oh yes. That's right. He's the greatest writer who ever lived" I thought. It will no doubt take a few...

It was like Deliverance meets Texas Chainsaw Massacre with a bit of Saw thrown in. A little hard to follow at times.

I'm not sure what to say about this that I haven't already said about other works of Shakespeare, more specifically his historical works. I don't like them very much, and this one was no exception. For more information and a summary of the plot (Wikipedia): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King_Lear

Alas, I have finished this book! It has been the equivalent of climbing Everest for me, considering that I have a fear of classics that is deeply set in my soul. Yes, it is a powerful tragedy, so powerful that I feel the need to take a break and read something simple and easy to understand! It's ver...

Excellent work. I saw this performed at the Great River Shakespeare Festival in Winona, MN. Very powerful performance. I liked this edition in particular because it explained the nuances of the language right next to the original text. That plus the performance made this easier to understand.

I’ve read some great interpretations of King Lear. It’s an allegory of Reason’s descent to immorality. It’s about accepting death. It’s a Freudian tale of seeking a maternal bond. However, as I read the play, I kept coming back to Sophocles. Shakespeare creates an English Oedipus. It’s not a dir...
