When the governess of two small children begins to see strange apparitions around her charges, she suspects there may be evil presences controlling their actions. It was gruesome, as, on Christmas Eve in an old house, a strange tale should essentially be…True, this novella is not your typical Christm...

One of the those weird books that could be rated 1 or 5 stars. A short novella (85 pages) yet it took me forever to read. How to descibe it? Let's just say that the genre is puritan England meets gothic litterature. Austin meets Lovecraft (not kidding, it's as good and as bad as all that). Can't tel...

Done with the class so no need to finish it anymore (for now). Really small chance I might pick it up again for fun.
Sarah ~Slow reader, or slowly reading? ;)
Flash review:I didn't hate this one, but I think if the sentences didn't run on for so long I would've liked it much more. The dialogue seemed to be the only thing keeping me interested near the end. Not usually a good thing.

Now you see me, ...now you don’t.. What the... Meaning, understanding and certainty all become elusive chimera in this ambiguous game of hide-and-seek that Henry James plays with us. Have you ever been in one of those weird situations where you wondered if you were losing your mind, doubting whet...

It is my firm belief that Henry James kept the Turn of the Screw purposefully ambiguous in order to reach both a broader audience but also a greater amount of emotion connection between the reader and the story itself. The not knowing makes one reread portions of the book again and again to try and...

I had a hard time with the language on this one...tough to follow. And I was continually frustrated with the governness in regards to Miles--if she wanted to know why he was kicked out of school, she should have asked him from the beginning, or written a letter to the headmaster!! It just seemed rea...

This story is a treasure of ambiguous words, symbols and interpretations, intriguing as much as annoying. I read this looking in vain for tangible facts – the only ones I got were against the main character, who seemed totally irrational bunch of extremes not only in descriptions but in actions, whi...

I was pretty sure that I didn't care for Henry James because I could not stand The Portrait of a Lady. I may have to rethink Henry James because I thought The Turn of the Screw was great! I did listen to this book on audiobook, and it was excellently narrated, so that probably helped me through Ja...

Turn of the Screw is a pretty cool story. It's about a governess who either heroically attempts to protect her two charges from malevolent ghosts or goes dangerously bonkers. James leaves it ambiguous and I love that kind of story. Ambiguity works for me. Four stars for the plot. Kindof an abrupt en...
