This was great fun! So much subtlety, so much "goes right over your head" humor. This book started out really cute, but it's as if the author just couldn't keep up the cuteness and then it went down from there.I listened to this on audio - read by the author. The vocal presentation was better tha...

A perfectly clever little book, very funny, very charming with a very good twist at the end. Served as a palate cleanser between heavier fare for me--delightful.

If you should find yourself with a couple of hours to spare, you could do much worse than to spend them with a copy of The Uncommon Reader and the beverage of your choice. Beautiful novella, imagining the effect on courtiers, corgis and protocol if the Queen develops a reading habit. The books she chooses are carefully chosen by Bennett to illuminate her metamorphosis. The main danger is reading it too quickly to savour it as it deserves. Bennett at his best.

A twee tale about Queen Elizabeth II's growth into a prodigous reader. It has some nice aphorisms about reading, but it was a little too lightweight for my taste.

A BOOK ABOUT THE LOVE OF READING ...The Queen, quite accidentally and only out of royal politeness, develops a passion for reading, much to the dismay of her family and stafff. Her royal duties, her tight schedule and even her personal care and appearance suffer because of this addiction to books. T...

The Queen (yes, that’s the Queen of England) unexpectedly drops into a bookmobile and unexpectedly develops a love, a passion for reading. That’s the whole plot behind this tiny novel. And does she ever become a better person. She found, as she read more and more, that she could put herself into the p...

Charming, but not at all twee. Universally beloved by everyone I know who's read it so far. That's a fair number of people, because I pretty much force this on everyone I meet who enjoys reading at all. Come to think of it, I suppose there would be even more advantage in thrusting it at people who d...

A delight from start to finish. Completely charming. Now I have to read his other stuff, but first, perhaps, I'll give Proust a go, finally.
