It's the beginning of the 20th century; the age of scientific progress. But for Venice the future looks bleak. A conference of scientists assembles to address the problems, among whose delegates are the parents of twelve-year-old Teodora. Within days of her arrival, she is subsumed into the secret life of Venice: a world in which salty-tongued mermaids run subversive printing presses, ghosts good and bad patrol the streets and librarians turn fluidly into cats. A battle against forces determined to destroy the city once and for all quickly ensues. Only Teo, the undrowned child who survived a tragic accident as a baby, can go 'between the linings' to subvert evil and restore order.

Tra gli scienziati chiamati a investigare sui fenomeni c’è la famiglia di Teodora Stampara, undicenne curiosa, intel...
I have mixed feelings about this book. The setting was awesome. I loved the mermaids and I'm not someone who's usually impressed with mermaids. The whole alternate historic Venice setting was great and so was the Book. I liked the heroine Teo(dora). She has exactly the qualities a lonely, geeky book...
An alt-history tale of Venice, where the city is under attack from a hidden, magical enemy and only an adopted girl, Teodora - with the help of a lot of mermaids, a prophecy and a boy - can hope to win the day.The first thing which will hit the reader in this book is the style. It's extremely ornat...
This was a disappointment. Apparently all scientists are unimaginative, rational and unable to appreciate art, mood or atmosphere. Being rational is intrinsically bad, also. Perhaps Ms. Lovric should meet some scientists, as in my experience many of them are keen on the arts and have to be imaginati...
