Even though it took me ages for me to finish this book (fifty-one days, Goodreads tells me), I loved it from beginning to end. I didn't really like Interview with the Vampire, the first part of Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles, but this was so, so much better. Interview lacked speed, a certain captiva...
Much better than Interview. Still, the detail is nearly overwhelming & in my opinion too much. This book could probably stand to lose 50 pages or more of excess detail, without taking anything important away.
I did not enjoy this nearly as much the second time through, as I did the first 20 years ago. While I enjoyed reading the vampire mythology, I found Lestat as a narrator to be less believable than Louis. And alot of the passages were achingly slow to me. I need more action, less sould-searching.
In Interview With the VampireI hated Lestat and thought he was a horrible person who stole both Louis and Claudia's mortal lifes and got Claudia killed. But in The Vampire Lestat you learn to love the "brat prince". You find out where he came from and what he truly knows about the vampires history. ...
Now here's a main character worth sticking with. Amazing characterization. I don't normally like first person, but this book is very close to the main character's point of view the whole time, and is awesome.
