Very good historical fiction. I don't really know a lot about this period of English history, beyond Shakespeare's "Richard the III," so it was interesting to learn some of the back story. I also really liked the writing style and the character development. I'll definitely be picking up "The Red ...
Philippa Gregory's newest historical fiction series covers the feud over who will rule England in the War of the Roses. This first book is told through the eyes of Elizabeth Woodville, a young widow who stops King Edward in the middle of the road in order to make a plea for her inheritance. Edward...
I learned from this book that everyone in England (and most of Western Europe) is either named Richard, Edward, George, Elizabeth, or Margaret. Seriously, how do you keep them all straight? Even the protagonist, who already has a son named Richard, goes and names another son Richard just for the hel...
The book got me hooked at the beginning, but then i started to lose interest as the story went. I found myself a bit annoyed that the characters didn't get any development, yes that might be true to most first person narrative books, but i have read some before in which you get to learn more about ...
3.5 starsI enjoyed this book. A first, coming into a historical fiction novel unaware of the outcome, so the story was fairly gripping. I found myself sympathising with Elizabeth, through all her plotting and scheming, was really a woman lucky (or unlucky) enough to fall in love with a king.
Ummmmm no. I am gonna pass on this one. I know that this book has gotten good reviews, but I cannot seem to understand why. The first 100 pages reads like a Harlequin novel. I hate those type of books. I will throw this one back in the pond for someone else.
The story starts after Edward has already gotten his crown and Elizabeth has become a widow. She waits for the king to pass her on the road and petition for her lands. And Edward, who just can’t leave a pretty woman alone, takes fancy on her. After Elizabeth refuses to become his mistress by theaten...
Delving into any of Ms. Gregory's novels is like visiting a good friend. One partially knows what to expect but the exact details remain unknown, lending an air of anticipation to the proceedings. With Ms. Gregory, the main character is going to be a strong female lead. While the main historical ...
I might have read a Philippa Gregory book way back, before the Tudor books, so I was very curious how she wrote when I started this one. And I liked what I read. I read a book about the War of the Roses not so long ago, but this story can sure be told again. It's about the sometimes oh so confusing W...
