A thoroughly strange experience, and not just because I read it in Swedish (Häxorna).First of all, it's a children's book about a global cult of child-murdering demons.Secondly, the hero is surprisingly gleeful about murdering them right back.Thirdly, it finishes on a heartbreaking kind of a pyrrhic...
What I like about this book, and also in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is the energy of either the Grandma or Grandpa... they may be old, but they surely want to join the adventure! Roald Dahl was an incredible writer, it seems he is talking directly to the kids, it is so funny.

I have lost count of the amount of times I have read this. I think I can actually recall the first time and it was when I was in junior school. A fantastic story that I loved as a child and still do to this day. Not my favourite Dahl but a very good read nonetheless.

I remembered this book as being an amusing read, and was surprised to find that it's actually part horror! Well, horror for kids anyway, and phrased in such a way that it never struck me as particularly horrific as a child. The main character is turned into a mouse? Well, he doesn't mind, so why sho...
