For all the reviews of this book, both positive and negative, few point out what genre it occupies. To me, this is the key to understanding the work; "Their Eyes Were Watching God" is simply a trashy romance novel! Think Danielle Steel, except less explicit and sleazy because it was written in 193...
What I enjoyed about the novel was the intimacy with the characters. We are right in Southern Florida, traveling alongside the main character Janie as she moves from husband to husband and town to town. I felt like I was right there with the characters, fully immersed in their world. However, I lost ...
This should've been a quick read (it really is once you get used to the Southern dialect), but since work has been crazy and we've had tornadoes everyday for the past few days I haven't been able to focus. So yay, the tornado sirens have finally stopped (for now) and I was able to finish. The only t...
I love this book. Holy cow. I don't even think I can put it into words, so let me just quote you some junk instead: "Ships at a distance have every man's wish on board. For some they come in with the tide. For others they sail forever on the horizon, never out of sight, never landing, until the Wa...
Before I review this book, I need to go run and get it so I can quote, because...yum. I enjoyed the plot of this one--in particular, the idea that the trials of life don't seem nearly so difficult with marriage to someone you love. I loved that Janie found a life for herself, that she wanted, though...
12/3/093.5 starsI'm of two minds about this book, but I am glad I read it and I do recommend it for the perspective it offers. It's interesting to see a slice of Negro life in the Florida of a century ago. Especially because much of this story takes place in Eatonville, a town the Negroes establish...
This was one of those books that I just never got around to reading - until now. The dialect was a little difficult to follow but opened up a window into the past and gradually into the life of the protagonist, Janie. It was intense and sad and lovely by the end.
One of my all-time favorite novels. Most of all, I fell in love with the language in this book. There's not really any way to spoil this novel, as so much is revealed in the first chapter. And, this book is driven by its characters and its language, rather than plot.Their Eyes Were Watching God demon...
what i said to brian is a good capsule review, i think:i have read that preeminent black writers of hurston's generation like richard wright scorned this book as something that would be palatable to white people, angered that it didn't push the political agenda, and that makes me sad because that me...
