Are ants animals? Do rabbits actually like lipstick? Are dogs really human? Does being kind to animals mean you can be cruel to people? Should a girl fall in love with her English teacher? Susie Harding joins the Animal Rights Federation because she has a crush on the teacher that organises it. She's not that convinced about becoming an animal rights activist. She tends to side with her mother, a parasitologist who believes that suffering in animals is justified if medical advances bring benefits to humans. But she soon discovers that sitting on the fence is uncomfortable and that love can be as cruel as hate.
