Winner of the Text Prize for Young Adult and Children's Writing, 2009. In the suburb of Shyness, where the sun doesn't rise and the border crackles with a strange energy, Wolfboy meets a stranger at the Diabetic Hotel. She tells him her name is Wildgirl, and she dares him to be her guide through the endless night. But then they are mugged by the sugar-crazed Kidds. And what plays out is moving, reckless…dangerous. There are things that can only be said in the dark. And one long night is time enough to change your life. 'This is Shyness is sure to be a hit with imaginative teenagers not convinced by the vampire genre…Hall's vision, channelled through her characters Wolfboy and Wildgirl…is sophisticated, funny and dead on. Their nocturnal meanderings, bizarre encounters and burgeoning romance are handled with unusual skill. This is Shyness is not so much a work of fantasy as a novel that works by fine-tuning the ordinary to illuminate its oddness…complex and convincing... Hall [is a] writer with incredible talents.' Imagine my extreme delight when I was able to stumble on TWO amazing books that I devoured in just days over the last few weeks. The second, This is Shyness, by Melbourne author, Leanne Hall leaves me almost wordless...
I really wanted to like this book - the blurb is so PROMISING! - and that I didn't was quite a disappointment for me. I liked the worldbuilding. Wolfboy was interesting - I want to know more about him and his condition, and the book only gave me little crumbs. I thought Wildgirl was... OK, although...
Ohhhhhhhhhhhh... this book is so damn weird. Like a really weird fairy tale with lots of crazy characters, googly eyes and a pink ukulele. This is Shyness, ensconced in eternal darkness because the sun has decided to take a break. A tourist, named Wildgirl, sits in a bar('The Diabetic'), bemoaning h...
3.5/5Couple the unresolved moments and the simplicity of telling in All I Ever Wanted with the oddness of Burn Bright, less the latter's more steam punk feel, then throw in some tarsiers. That's right... tarsiers! And you just might get a feel of how richly imaginative, yet definitely odd THIS IS SH...
