John Charles, “J. C.” Ryle waxes eloquent in this presentation of the “Immortality of the Soul.” From this discourse the editor, Gary Lee Roper, D.D., has drawn useful material for many of his own sermons, especially funeral sermons throughout the years. In addition to his discussion of the immortality of the soul, Ryle has added a post script on the concept of “universal reconciliation,” which he considered profane. Tracing its roots in Origen, Ryle’s contemporary Canon Frederic William Farrar, had begun to teach this doctrine in the Anglican church. Ryle wrote a rebuttal to Farrar’s unorthodox theology which is forceful, convincing, and sound. Ryle also presents a good case for Particular Redemption in this book. The editor has provided a biographical sketch of the life of J. C. Ryle. Unlike public domain electronic books that have been merely scanned, this one has been re-typeset by a real person in text that is editable and compatible with electronic readers. The print can be re-sized, searches can be performed, and so on.
