Funny enough, my library has the pbk book (I gave up on the ebook) marked as SF! But I'm with Bookstooge I think, I wouldn't classify it as such.

I'm on page 142 of 295 and I like it but I have to say I'm not completely sold. That's mostly because there's a lot of Mort and not a lot of Death. That said, I did like the scene between him and Ysabell and I'm dying over the footnotes. LL got treated to several of them last night and we both enjoyed them greatly.

Keli...I like her but just when we start to get to know her, the book whisks us off to somewhere else.

Is it bad that I'm liking the writing style, world-building, and mythos more then most of the characters?

Yes, the humor is similar and of the two I do prefer Fforde. His characters always seem to be strong enough to stand up to the elaborate world-building and humor going on around them.

I'm definitely going to read more Death books but Mort is just not connecting with me as I'd hoped.

Nope. I'm the same way. I'm loving the writing, but the characters aren't connecting (except Death).

But I don't want to make it sound like I'm not really enjoying this book, because I definitely am!

I know! I am too. But I'm hoping Death will make more of an appearance later on. Fingers crossed!
I finished my read of Mort. Overall, I enjoyed the bejeezus out of the book, with the exception of those things I mentioned earlier. But I loved it for the writing, not to much the characters and the story. Weird turn of events for me, as I normally read the books I read for the characters and sometimes in spite of the writing/plotting.

I just wasn't invested in the story's tension and I thought the ending was... well, I was left shaking my head thinking what?...really? I didn't understand the depth of Death's anger either - he did up and disappear, leaving Mort on his own on his second night. I'm not going to say anything else because I don't want to spoil anything.

But that writing... so talented! So funny!

Perfect analogy!
Yes, hatracks!

I've finished too and Mort's a 4 star book for me--I enjoyed it a lot, the writing is wonderful, and I''m sure I'll read more but I'm not rushing to my library (or bookstore or Amazon) for further volumes. I am really glad to finally read something from this series.

I too agree with the analogy! It fits so many of the characters in here perfectly.

I've also finished Mort but I'm still chewing on my thoughts for the book. I think it'll be a four star read for me as well and I plan to read the next book in the series in a month or so...but right now I'm going off to sit in a corner and figure out exactly how I feel/what I think about this book.
