Please gives us your recs for good non-fiction books about BDSM. State why you like them.
It's late here and I need to rethink the organisation of the books a bit, because we don't (hopefully just only yet) have any sub-threads.
Just read your review, and I read an excerpt of this one I believe and wasn't really blown away by it. I'm a sadist, and the chapter on sadism was, heh, curious would be a mild expression ;) But then, I'm not American, and I've more than once noticed there are quite some differences in how people view kink either side of the pond. ;)
I'd also love to sort the fiction books into brackets - those which show or deal with actual BDSM, those which just hide non-con/dub-con away under the term, torture-porn, etc..
LOL, please, I take suggestions as well. But e.g. lumping BDSM together with sadomasochism or other kinds of dark erotica is kind of a pet peeve with me ;)
BDSM is, to me, an acronym which means a particular mode of engaging in sadomasochism or D/s or any of the other kinks. It was coined to describe a consensual activity, which either follows SSC or RACK. So either consent is present, or if not, then this is a topic of relevance for the participants.
Sado-masochism on the other hand is not per se linked to consent, just as e.g. non-con slave or abduction stories aren't. Or to use an example, what de Sade describes in "Justine" as done to her is sadistic, but it's no BDSM.
As to kink, there are variations, in real life, between e.g. Japan, the USA, the UK or for instance France or Germany. BDSM, kink and fetish also is a cultural thing, it's not everywhere the same. Even though after 50 Shades of Grey you somewhat get that impression :P
And, please, I would prefer people to simply ask, and ask and talk openly. ;) No need to beg pardon for being curious ;)
I wasn't talking about FifthAngel there. And no, consensual non-consent, or meta-consent, has its place--under specific conditions. I had problems with his generalisations about sadism and sadists. He is quite far out and on the opposite end of a lot of people. Posing as being a middle-of-the-road sadist isn't helpful, though I suppose that is also due to the authors/editors.
Above and regarding non-con vs. BDSM I was talking e.g. the non-con as taking place in books like The Dark Duet (which I happen to adore), or Kitty Thomas books. Too often people call these BDSM books instead of what they are about.
I agree, FSoG is quite BDSM-negative, and Christian is quite similar to Edward Cullen. In just about any respect ;) Which is only logical.
Oh I like reading dub-con and non-con, I'd call most of Thomas and definitely the Dark Duet simply sado-masochism. The direction is there, just not anything which would coin it related to the lifestyle. I'm still hunting (very cautiously) for something else like the Dark Duet. No such luck so far.
LOL, I'm allergic to alpha-males, so an ex-Navy-Seal doesn't exactly sound like I should read it ;) I've been pushing through a pile of tentacle sex stories currently, and found a few gems. And then there is that slave-series by Charlotte Mistry which I'll try next month I think. If it survive the BDSM-themed-book-purge on Amazon... O.o
Shoves an s up there ^^^^ Gosh, I miss the edit button.
Caleb? Nah. He was no alpha. I guess it's a question of definition. But to me he was more a victim and suffering from PTSD than anything else. Most of the time I felt sorry for him.
Well, Smashwords may or may not tune in on that nonsense. Currently already D2D is refusing to process certain books. But that also is another topic I'd say. It's unfortunate what's happening there.
LOL, sadists are far less mean than their reputation ;)
