I just adored this novel. I mean how can you NOT enjoy a novel with Victorian-era gender-bending (lesbian) women? I think some might find this novel a little slow at first, but once you get into it, it starts picking up the pace.

Visit my blog!4.5 starsSarah Water’s debut novel set in 1890s London is a delightfully shocking tale of exploring the boundaries of gender roles in the Victorian era. It's about finding out who you really are and being comfortable in your own skin and about overcomi...
This was a re-read... it was the first Waters novel I'd read, and I read it because I saw (and loved) the film. But elements of the film and the book were getting a bit confused in my head, plus I'd run out of books by Waters to read, so I thought I'd read this one again. It's really an excellent boo...
After loving Fingersmith, I was all ready for another Sarah Waters outside-of-the-box story. But it wasn't to be; for me, Nan was so self-centered she became increasingly unlikeable. I am all for self-discovery but Nan becomes so wrapped up in herself that she is incredibly one-dimensional and I car...
Once again I look at the Visual Bookshelf rating and don't understand the 84%. This is absolutely one of the best books I've read all year, if not the best (then again, considering what I've read that might not be so much of a compliment).I have a few gripes with it, the main one being the overuse ...
Read half of this but then put it down as I was too busy at the time to get into it.It was quite good but not brilliant. I thought the TV drama by Andrew Davies was much better.
i did find this book compelling, but i really can't attribute that to the characters or the writing. the writing was definitely average or slightly better, but if this story was about heterosexual people, i'm quite sure i wouldn't like it. i read very few books with alternative sexual orientation/...
This was Sarah Waters's breakout debut novel and is a big favorite for a lot people. I did really enjoy this, but probably not quite as much as I was expecting. Probably a combination of factors at work here. First, my hopes were very high given how much I had enjoyed her other novels (Night Watc...
From the publisher: This delicious, steamy debut novel chronicles the adventures of Nan King, who begins life as an oyster-girl in the provincial seaside town of Whitstable and whose fortunes are forever changed when she falls in love with a cross-dressing music-hall singer named Miss Kitty Butler....
An eye-opening, though slightly schematic, trip through some lesser-known areas of Victorian society. Quite well-written. I've read it twice now; the second time, I was going to give it away, opened it to the first page, and found myself sucked into reading it right through again. The first time I r...
