This is one of those occasions where, overall, I am rather neutral about this book. I really disliked some aspects and enjoyed others, but by the end I was left thinking, "eh, whatever." In fact, I finished this book a couple of days ago but it took me awhile to muster any interest in writing the re...

This series was written for a young adult audience so even though it's a dark fairy tale, it never gets too graphic. The gritty underworld the author creates within New York City is enchanting and terrifying all at the same time, and the HEA comes with a definite price (but keep reading the series f...

My first Holly Black book, many years ago. A very wonderful introduction to the genre itself, though I was disappointed to go without anything by Holly Black for many, many years to come. I bought Tithe on holiday, and her books in general weren't stocked where I lived until only very recently.

I've given this book 3 stars for these reasons,(1) I found it hard to get in to and hard to releate to Kaye, she seemed so stand ofish all the time.(2) I was getting way too confused, one sentence your talking to Kaye's friend Janet and than your in a graveyard with a completely different person and...

Holly Black's "Tithe" is categorized as "Young Adult" fiction, but I don't intend to let that sway my judgment. I agree with John Green, who said that "Teen readers are not looking for characters they can identify with. They are looking for characters that they recognize are not bullshit!"The main c...

Well, it had been a while since I had read a book like this. And by sayin 'like this' I mean bad. The whole book is just an excuse to have the female lead get the dark but actually gentle male lead to fall for her. Typical story of a weird girl that finds out she's actually super important and speci...

Ummm . . . can I ask why the name is Tithe: A Modern "Faery" Tale, and the name of the series is The Modern "Faerie" Tales?See the difference? Y and IE. Pretty obvious, isn't it? Don't people have any brains?Holly Black has some warped ideas about what is acceptable for the teen shelves. You know, s...

This was great. Tithe is the type of novel I love. I put off reading it for a while, because I had high hopes for Holly Black, and the only thing I've ever read by her is the spiderwick chronicles, which was years ago. The tone of the book is just so ... gritty and unforgiving and honest. The settin...

I briefly met Holly Black at a signing some time ago, and I could just tell she was cool. Finally got around to reading a couple of her books. I was afraid they wouldn't live up to my expectations, but - yeah, they're cool! They're definitely YA - I think I would have enjoyed them even more if I were...

I have to admit my bias: I've only read three - well, four now - of Holly Black's books, but I am a huge fan of her writing. From what I've seen on Goodreads, it's not a universal opinion, but I'm thoroughly enchanted by her style. Her words have this incredible ability to set a mood, to create scen...
