The Scottish clans are in a state of relative peace, but the sons of Strathyre are still expected to serve two years as soldiers. Mackie's least favourite task is being on watch outside the chief's castle, and he's unexpectedly forced into action when he spies an intruder in the woods. As a result, Mackie is assigned to accompany the chief's eldest son, Alexander, to his uncle's castle in Braelen. The trip should be a short and uneventful one, but when disaster strikes, Mackie’s strength and bravery are tested to the limit. As they resume their journey, Mackie finds himself in an even more perilous situation, when Alexander makes it clear he wants more from him than simply his protection. Mackie tries to maintain the proper distance between a soldier and his master, until the pair are confronted with danger once more.
