To The One was originally the title of an anti-gay pamphlet given to author Marnie Freeman by her bishop. “If you were to be hung on a cross, you would belong between a murderer and a pedophile,” said the bishop to Freeman when, as a devout Mormon teen, she sought his help for her growing attraction to women. Having never acted on her feelings, Freeman intensified her practices of prayer, fasting, service and morning seminary, holding on to a guarantee made by a church leader from Salt Lake City that they would lead to a marriage in the Temple and a happily-ever-after life. Freeman's intriguing story traces her efforts to be heterosexual. It captures her wish to remain Mormon and her heartache when the truth becomes unbearable and she contemplates ending her life. The story traces the mysterious encounter that led her to face a Church court of seventeen men and, ultimately, to her spiritual awakening. Whereas that original pamphlet was written to the one who is judged as being a disgrace and unworthy, Freeman flips the meaning in her book and writes directly To The One who is gay, To The One who is loved, and To The One who is worthy.
