I read the Vintage edition that included an afterword where Morrison discusses the problems she sees in her first novel, and while I enjoyed Beloved and Song of Solomon more, this book in spite of Morrison's complaints is an amazing debut. We can see in the text the seeds of the author's immense t...

I don't really know what to say about this book, literature-wise. What I know is that it touched me. I left a comment over halfway through, about crying to the beat of the lifting bits, and negative spaces, and I don't know if I'm capable of doing it more justice. There was a lot that kept crashin...

to raise a child or banish a ghost. The end of the novel, the sense of strength, hope, community and forgiveness, repays the reader for the trauma endured and a story powerful enough to make tears flow like rivers. There are some truly incredible lines. The language Morrison uses is evocative an...

I might right a more formal review later, but for now - you can see why he was such a great writer. I love that he embraces Sci-Fi as well as the short stories that are interviews with animals. The poetry is good too. Toni Morrison's intro is her standard brilliance.

But it included no less than three absolutely knock-out fabulous books, plus a fourth that was almost as...

This story is so full of rage and love and pain and grief, and I can’t do it justice with a review, except to say that it broke my heart and I am a little different for having read it. Hardcover version. This is one of those books that is absolutely not suited to audio, at least on the first readi...

Not too much to say about this one except every word just drips with rawness. The question is what would you do? Would you do as Sethe did? Would you have done something differently? I can't imagine being owned by someone. I can't imagine my body not being mine to command. I can't imagine my child...

You know your love keeps on lifting me, lifting me higher and higherEarlier this year, I realized two things: (1) Even though Toni Morrison's Song of Solomon is one of my desert island books, I’ve only read it once, and that was about 15 years ago, and (2) I haven’t even owned a copy for half that t...
