Great story with a wonderful, courageous, young female protagonist, which you don't see too often in Westerns. After her father is shot down by a low-down coward while on a trip to Fort Smith, 14-year old Mattie Ross courageously sets out on an adventure deep into Indian territory to avenge him, wi...

Having recently watched John Wayne as Rooster Cogburn in "True Grit", I looked up some information about the movie. I discovered it was based on a book, so hence my trip to the library to procure same. The movie is VERY faithful to the book, which I like. Scenes are taken almost verbatim from the p...

This book is, without a doubt, an American classic. I was entranced by this tale of 14-year-old Mattie Ross, who is determined to bring her father’s killer to justice. This is one of those novels I was sorry to see end, and had the urge to immediately reread.

Read this for a class, but it really was incredibly enjoyable. Works as a straight-up revenge and adventure story, and also on many a level more than that. All in a very short book with a very distinctive and funny voice. No time to write a longer review, but it's great!

Excellent read. I would have given this a 5 star but I felt it could have been fleshed out a bit. The movie holds pretty true to the book but there a few minor deviations made to make the movie more "viewable".

Read this so many years ago that I can barely remember the story but I do remember that I thought it was a great book. Maybe a re-read might be fun!

Now I can say I've read a western. This is a decent story with excellent use of first-person narration--the whole book is essentially a monologue and that's well-done. I don't have much to say about it though; don't think I'll be seeking out any more westerns any time soon.
