This must have been an edge-of-your-seater back when it came out. It looks a bit dated when held up to the light of the 21st century though. The writing is not stellar, but as pure adventure there are certain passages that still entertain.

I find that Jules Verne's books are of very varied quality. Fortunately this was one of the good ones, and I really enjoyed reading it. However, it is rather amusing to read about the technology he thinks will be available and how absurd some of his assumptions are - putting a bit of fantasy/sci-fi ...

"Submarine" really had a different meaning in 1869--it meant under water. It's impossible to envision what it was like to read this when it first was published.Really the only bit of suspense is in Antarctica.
