When I began reading this, I was a little worried it wouldn't live up to the wonderful memories I have of Pillars of the Earth but it did! Follett has a way of taking the most mundane activities which go into running a town (albeit in a 14th century setting) and twisting them into rivetting storylin...
A History Nut's Romantic State of Mind
I have read 2 books from this author and both times had trouble getting into the stories. I think he builds an interesting tale but I just cannot form a connection, much to my regret.

Set two centuries after Pillars of the Earth, the people of Kingsbridge are at it again. The cathedral built in Pillars is in disrepair after part of the roof caved in, the bridge collapsed, and the prior is dead. Also, the constant maneuvering continues...So, I fell into a trap with this one. Af...

While it is a book that consistently holds your interest, it is too similar to the first book in the series, Pillars of the Earth, to be as good. It was too repetitive, and at times it felt as if it was the same book, same theme, same plot, with only the names and dates changed. It takes place in th...

Just re-read The Pillars of the Earth and World Without End back-to-back. Basically, they're the same book, separated in time by about 200 years. World Without End could be a great book on its own, I think, but when compared to its predecessor, it falls WAY short. The book is simply the cardboard copy of the first novel only without any likeable, well developed characters, concrete themes and satisfying ending. Plus, the explicit scenes that c...

I should probably preface this by saying that I made the mistake of first watching the first half of the tv mini series for this book, and then reading the whole book. I therefore spent the entire first half of the book comparing each and every difference between the two - and there are a LOT. For a...
