I'm torn on what to rate this book. If I was to rate it based purely on its anti-slavery message, it'd be a 5 star book. If I was to rate it on story, maybe 3 stars. Characters would be a 4. Writing quality would be a 2. And tangential preaching would be a 1. But all of that combined... I'm not sure...

I can't believe that this book that Abraham Lincoln called "the fuse that lit the Civil War" has a rating of 3.67. This is probably the first book that I remember reading that really gave me my "anger" over slavery in this country. I read this book when I was about 11 and still remember it and the e...

This is a book everyone has heard of, but few have read. The title has turned into a well know adjective that is intended to be uncomplimentary. It is an uncomfortable book for readers today because some the 19th Century ideas expressed by the characters (including blacks, whites, abolitionists an...

I played 'Eva' in a school production of this when I was 8, but remembered almost nothing of the play itself. I really enjoyed it, but was utterly appalled at the way slaves were treated!! I can't believe people could get themselves to treat other human beings that way. I know one of the problems wa...

I understand the significance of this book, which is fully five stars, but I have to balance that against the pleasure of reading it, which is, at best one star.

Heard of this book last night in "The Abolitionists" so it peeked my curiosity to read it. I didn't know it had such a effect in the start of the Civil War!
