Using the medium of comics, to teach the history, composition, creation, properties and philosophy of comics, is perhaps the only way that these things could actually be taught. It's a classic for a reason. I don't really agree with his views on the one-panel gag, but McCloud is pretty open about not being "the authority". A great explanation of how comics work without getting bogged down in comics history, and it pays respect to manga as well.
