by Scott McCloud
A really interesting look at comics through comics. There were a few bizarre ideas in the book like the one that “[t]he more cartoony a face is, for instance, the more people it could be said to describe.” (Technically true but ignores a lot of issues in interpretation. Think of a stick figure. Wi...
McCloud has done very well with this book. Using the medium of comics, to teach the history, composition, creation, properties and philosophy of comics, is perhaps the only way that these things could actually be taught. McCloud is actually able to demonstrate, right there, what he is discussing. ...
Holy Toledo! This book was fantastic. The now-widespread idea that comics are capable of deep expression and not just a low form of entertainment comes from 'Understanding Comics'. The format has come a long way in 25 years, but McCloud's work is still an essential read for any comics, graphic novel...
It's a classic for a reason. I don't really agree with his views on the one-panel gag, but McCloud is pretty open about not being "the authority". A great explanation of how comics work without getting bogged down in comics history, and it pays respect to manga as well.
an exploration of comics and comic book style art through a comic, clever and interesting.
3.5 StarsThis book started off enjoyable enough, I thought Scott McCloud was a fun "narrator" for this story and I enjoyed the way his character (cartoon?) spoke to the audience. The back third of the book, however, gets a bit more "technical" and I found myself very easily distracted from what I wa...
Understanding Comics: the Invisible Art is a book by Scott McCloud that gives an interesting perspective on the art form of comics. I read this book a few years ago in college. It was a rainy day in the library and I was waiting for a ride. A teacher at mine was a big advocate for McCloud and rec...
It's done in a graphic/comic book style. I had it out, but had to return it. I think I might want to read it. . . when I have time.
Having already read Making Comics: Storytelling Secrets of Comics, Manga and Graphic Novels (also by Scott McCloud), I knew I was going to like this one as well. I read Scott McCloud's other book because when I searched for this one it was unavailable, and I was too eager to learn more about comic...
