Today’s headlines are filled with alternative facts, harassment, bullying, stealing, killing, prejudice, and hated. People in role model positions for our children are not always demonstrating good values. Some are in very visible positions. Our kids are seeing that sometimes the end justifies the means. Or that telling a lie is ok for a cause. Or blood doping is ok to win. Or that cheating to win a political office is ok for the greater agenda. Or that demeaning others is actually an accepted behavior. We can blame others for the lack of a moral compass in our society, or perhaps the issues are because we, as parents, are not making teaching values the priority it needs to be. The human fabric of our world depends on our choice to do a better job.As parents we spend a lifetime passing our knowledge onto our children hour by hour and day by day. Sometimes we teach in a planned way but most times we are reacting to events as they occur. Like, don’t chew with your mouth full or don’t touch, the stove is hot. Or don’t jump off the waterfall; you’ll break your neck! Some of our knowledge is received and some bounces off.We give ourselves a passing grade that we are doing the best we can. Parenting is, by far, the hardest thing we attempt in life. There are no perfect parents or kids. I did not live the perfect life, nor was I the perfect parent. This book is about understanding that values matter and that it is imperative we take responsibility for teaching them. Our kids are being bombarded with “ALTERNATIVE VALUES”.We must take responsibility for correcting this course in our society.A teaching manual does not exist. But there is no need for a fancy “how to” book to guide us on our path. This book is written to show that stories about our everyday lives are a chance to talk to our kids about values.I hope these stories will inspire you to take each topic and pick a story from your life to talk to your kids about things that will make their life better. Things that will make them better parents, friends, co-workers, spouses, and contributors to a better world. Stories make values understandable. If you struggle with developing stories from you own life you can use the ones in this book. Each story can be read by your child. You then discuss the story and what it means and why it is important. Within a short time you will have passed on your values. And countered what they are being confronted with.Changing the direction of our world is up to us. I hope this book inspires you to begin a dialog with your kids about the values you feel are important for a successful life. So let’s start now!
