'War Horse' is a wonderful story about the power one horse can have on the lives of the people he meets. It is told simply yet powerfully from the horses point of view, creating an entirely different war-time perspective.
There are lots of books I've read about World War I and from lots of perspectives. However, I've never read one from the perspective of a horse. Until today. War Horse is the story of Joey and Albert (Joey's the horse) and their friendship. Joey, unfortunately, goes off to World War I without Albert...
Sure, it's got a built-in audience: it's about war and it's about horses. I found it sadly lacking though. Written more than sixty years after WWI, long after farm horses have ceased to be common, the author really should have explained to the readers what he was talking about. What is this hot mash...
I came to this not realising that it was a children's book, nor that it was told from the point of view of the horse. Having read I it I will only say that I was moved to tears in places and look forward to seeing what the film-makers have done with it

Joey is the War Horse in the title and we read this story as told in his voice. Wait … wait … before you roll your eyes and brush this off as another book narrated by an animal (granted there has been a glut lately) or think ala Mr. Ed, realize this book was first published in 1982. Sold into army...

The atrocities of WWI as told from an equine perspective. Being that, the story lacks the gruesome harshness as war stories often have. Instead, the focus is upon the interaction and companionship between the men and these beasts, the war horses.
A friend of mine was raving about the play based on this book and now I understand there is to be a film. All I can say is for a book of 111 pages it brings to life the horror of war and that even then there is courage and kindness.I recommend this book to one and all.
