I thought this book was fantastic! I really enjoyed the narrative being from the elder Jacob and then the younger version as well. The older Jacob was great but hit close to home for me. It was hard not to think about my own grandparents while reading this story. It's funny how we seem to forget tha...

I would have liked this book so much more if it were written by a better writer. Don't get me wrong, I did like it, but only because I am kind of a sucker for a romance, so long as it does not have heaving bosoms and/or Fabio on the cover, and it is not written by Danielle Steel. But honestly, the w...

I had a bit of trouble getting into this book. I've been reading a lot of reviews and many people enjoyed the beginning more than the end....I think for me it the was opposite. The book at the beginning seemed very detailed and slow pace...I really had to fight my way through it. The moment Rosie sh...

All I can say is that I really enjoyed this book! Yeah there were a few questionable thoughts here and there like why was Jacob so obsessed with Marlena she seemed slightly ditzy to me and the ending where Jacob joins the circus in his 90's, the man can barely walk. But over all I loved the whole fe...

Water for Elephants is utterly safe and predictable. It's a love story set in a traveling circus in the 1930s, and for a book that touches on abusive relationships, mental illness, poverty, and the subjugation of the economically weak, it is disappointingly mundane and in no way challenges how we th...

Loved this book. The characters are just a tad flat, but it was lots of fun. I mean, the bad guy is -really- bad, the pretty lady is -really- pretty, and the good guy is really very good. But it's a lovely romantic triangle, and I loved the period details. I feel like I've learned lots of new things...

Robert Pattinson as Jacob Jankowski; Tai as Rosie the Elephant; and Reese Witherspoon as Marlena Rosenbluth, in the movie version of “Water for Elephants”.★★★☆☆ (This is a review of the audiobook.) John Randolph Jones as Jacob - the novel’s protagonist - at a curmudgeonly ninety-something, and Davi...

This was such a great audio. I so loved the two narrators that switched back and forth from past to present. And the story itself was simply breathtaking, poignant, and altogether wonderful. It makes me want to learn more about those circuses from long ago and the people that were a part of them. De...

I don't normally enjoy literary fiction, so I'm doubly pleased by the recent treasures I've uncovered. Water for Elephants is just . . . beautiful. It has a gentle, undulating pace and a dark expressiveness that was both incredibly poetic and very intense. Gruen takes the readers on a journey behind...
