Ten years ago, I probably would have LOVED this book. Sadly, I think, and I thought I'd never say this, this book passed my perssonal expiration date a few years back.Don't get me wrong, I did like the book, and I'd recommend it to any pre-teen, but if I had to describe it all I could probably say w...
Very readable, although especially to start with, I felt there was far too much tell, tell, tell and barely any showing at all. Either I got used to the style or it got better, but it didn't bother me as much towards the end. I'm not quite sold on Daine yet and all other characters just seemed to be...
Daine leaves her hometown after her mother's death. She has to find a job to feed herself and her horse friend Clover. Her first job is to take care of the Riders' horses, but then it's discovered that she has magic. Her next job is to develop her talents. In the meanwhile, divine creatures from the...

I hopped into this book hoping I would not be confused out of my mind. I have heard of her Tamora Pierce's other Tortall books, especially the enormously popular ones about Alanna, but the premise of those books didn't interest me. I hate to admit it, and this is terrible backwards of me, but books ...
3 stars from the adult me, but this would definitely be a 5-star book for the 10-year old me - a time when I was reading animal stories and fantasy and wishing I could talk with animals (ok, I still wish that :)
I enjoyed this book. It was quick and engaging, but Daine wasn't as much of a trope-breaking heroine as Alanna was, and she was a bit (but just a bit) of a Mary Sue. I've already got books 2-4 from the library. Will be banging them out in short order. P.S. BABY DRAGON.
Reading "Mastiff", Tamora Pierce's latest, has made me want to go back and re-visit Daine, a dear childhood friend - and this Full Cast Audio rendition was really well done.
It was a really good start to a series and I can't wait to read the rest. I loved the characters and even though I have not read Tamora Pierce's other novels, I am pretty sure that she brings beloved characters back into this series from other series. One such character is Alanna, The Lioness. The ma...
If you have read my other reviews, you will know that I am a huge Tamora Pierce fan, (though I am now perhaps a little older than her target demographic). However, despite this I am not blinded to the faults in her writing, something which I discovered in the disappointing recent release "Melting St...
