The Minnesota-born immigrant's son struck his first niche in a National Geographic photo essay on the Amish; but seeking wider issues, he moved further afield, documenting the vanishing West, Indian Untouchables, and the Basque countryside. This ample pictorial draws on the full diversity of his work, paradoxically lending us a vivid sense of its root continuity. The book carries an admiring foreword by artist William Kentridge.
