Mark Helprin's acclaimed novel is now a major motion picture starring Colin Farrell, Jessica Brown Findlay, Jennifer Connelly, William Hurt, Eva Marie Saint, and Russell Crowe. Written and directed by Oscar-winning screenwriter Akiva Goldsman (A Beautiful Mind), in theatres February 14, 2014.   New York City is subsumed in arctic winds, dark nights, and white lights, its life unfolds, for it is an extraordinary hive of the imagination, the greatest house ever built, and nothing exists that can check its vitality. One night in winter, Peter Lake--orphan and master-mechanic, attempts to rob a fortress-like mansion on the Upper West Side.Though he thinks the house is empty, the daughter of the house is home. Thus begins the love between Peter Lake, a middle-aged Irish burglar, and Beverly Penn, a young girl, who is dying.Peter Lake, a simple, uneducated man, because of a love that, at first he does not fully understand, is driven to stop time and bring back the dead. His great struggle, in a city ever alight with its own energy and beseiged by unprecedented winters, is one of the most beautiful and extraordinary stories of American literature.

My favorite contemporary fantasy after Gormenghast and Little, Big. The sort of big, yet grounded achievement you don't see too much outside of the Latin American magic realists. Superb, funny, awe-inspiring.

Basically we all knew this was coming. This book has the honor of being one of the few books in my life that I have given up on. I usually don't give up easily but I work too hard and am too busy to waste my time trying to slog through this book. The book jumps around too much to really become inter...

Life is really too short to read this: I stopped at 32%, but I could feel a two-star rating coming. Helprin's writing is so flowery, so kitchy, so over the top, it's nearly hypnotic. Every half-informative sentence sprouts a completely superfluous one:Rum, champagne, cakes, and roasts were everywher...

Disappointing but not awful...it was a little bit out there and hard to follow and the conclusion didn't really tie up all the loose ends with much of an explanation, so I wasn't really satisfied with this book. Although it did hold my attention but ultimately left me disappointed.
